My gearbox has started to make a noise. When i change gear 4th to 5th at high revs, I get a crunch noise before it goes in to 5th Gear. Its ok changing gear, 4th to 5th with nornal driving, this only happens when i put the power down. Im starting to hear horror storys about the 03wrx gearbox on other sites. :frown:

Have you checked gearbox oil level?
First thing i done Bob.Just below the full and nice and clear:smile:
Sounds like sycromesh (sp) but hard to say without stripping it down. Iuse to get this on an old scoob going from 5th to 4th a blip of the throttle stopped it crunching. I did another 40,000 and sold it. So yours may last for years yet...

I will see how it goes. I will try and find some more info out. But you know me, I like things to work :innocent0009:
If you say may be ok for 40,000 that sould keep me quite for about a year.........

You could try changing the gearbox oil.
Mine used to crunch alot going into reverse. Now I thought that was a synchromesh thing, but changing the oil made it go away.
This picture is from a low mileage Evo 6:
The photo isn't great but you can clearly see the amount of metal stuck to the magnetic drain plug. This is considered ok as long as there are no teeth in it.
Mine had done twice the miles of this car and didn't have even half of whats on that one.
Oh yeah, and I used the cheapest gearoil I could find as an experiment (Planet oils) According to the myths my gearbox should have broken by now at these power levels and they say it will break even faster if I don't use top price fluid like Syntrax or Redline shockproof. So we'll wait and see.

It does surprise me the differance it make when using differant oils in the gearbox. I changed the gear oil on a rover 2600 when fitting a new engine after it was all refitted I could not get any gears with the engine running but switch off select gear restart the car and it would run ok in that gear but could not change into another gear. Thought I was going to have to remove the gearbox again but mate told me to put Auto fluid in and it worked a treat. Aperantly the old rovers used auto fluid much thiner. So thickness of oil must make a differance.

Have to be honest...the gearbox in my old WRX was the notchiest box I've ever experienced and made worse by all the clutch judder when cold...still, it's part of the experience.
IIRC correctly though the design of the box is around 30 years old!

This is not notch mate, This is a nice crunch just like changing gear with no clutch:frown:

when was the last time the oil was changed ?
its normally 3rd that starts playing up when the box is on the way out
change it using castrol syntrax and put in an extra 0.3 litre
my uk takes 3.8 but i always put in a bit extra to make sure 3rd is always covered ;)
Would think the 5th gear syncro/selectors have given up the ghost...:frown: There was a well known problem with one of the scoobs gearboxes about the 5th gear syncro/selectors retaining nut. Cannot remember which box it was though. Another 2nd hand box would be cheaper than a rebuild but if not carefull could end up with 2 f**ked boxes...:hysterical: Drive it to the death

I get a nasty crunch going into reverse but find it better if i put it in 1st before.

Put it in 5th and without letting up the clutch put it in reverse.
Putting it in 5th slows the gearbox and, in practise, actually works.

Not worth it mate.
Best off selling the sport and buying a turbo.
They're cheap enough these days.
